The City of Sorrento: Between History and Myth

Sorrento, lived between myth and history, exists since when the city of Rome was founded; the etymology of the name comes from "Land of Syrens", in Latin Sirentum, or from "Surréo", that means litterally Scroll, suggested to the Greeks, fashinated from the beauty of the numerous rivers that were falling in to the Tyrrhenian Sea; the roots are originary from Paleolithic era.

A city, an authentic "Castrum" defended from three sides by valleys and from the sea where the city is located at a height of 50 metres.

During the Roman Empire, Sorrento has been declared "Municipium" and at the end of the first millennium  duchy, with its own currency, from Sarno area to Punta Campanella area, excluded Stabia, Vico Equense, Massa Lubrense (1467) and Piano (1808).

The aristocracy was used to meet into the so called "Sedili" (areas dedicated to conversations and debates) of Porta and Dominova, the only ones that still exist in all Napoli area after the abolition with the Napoleonic law of the 25th April 1800.

The city of Sorrento has been developed following the urbanistic canons of the Greek-Roman epoque with the so called "Decumani" (located at est and west) and the "Cardini" (located at the north and south), today is possible to identify it in San Cesareo Street, Santa Maria della Pietà Street(decumani) and Tasso Street, R. Reginaldo Giuliani Street (cardini), with four gates, where the most important is located towards the so called "Piano", where it was located the ancient statue of the Saint protector of Sorrento, Saint Antonino (Antony), Sant'Antonino (it is still possible to see it at the entrance of the historical centre).

It was an Archiepiscopal site with a large heritage of Churches and Religious Convents rich in architecture and in art masterpieces, assigned to religious confraternities established in the 14th Century.

The most important monuments are the Chiostro of Saint Francesco, an important work of the 13th century, the bell tower of the Cathedral, the Sedil Dominova, located in San Cesareo Street, some buildings located among Santa Maria della Pietà Street.
