A rich selection of interesting tours in the Gulf of Naples and other locations is available for the following destinations:
The “Amalfi Drive” is said to be the most spectacular in Europe: the winding cliff top road offers breathtaking panoramic views at every turn as far as Amalfi, one of the most ancient maritime republics and also the home town of Flavio Gioia, the man who invented the compass. In the centre of Amalfi, the beautiful Cathedral devoted to Saint Andrew (9th Century) stands superbly on the top of a great flight of steps and features a spectacular 19th Century’s mosaic on the facade.
Free time for lunch. We suggest you go to look at the “Arsenali”, the naval dockyards where they used to build the galleys of Amalfi’s fleet, and you cannot miss a visit to the Emerald Grotto, from the port of Amalfi.
Then you climb to Ravello where beautiful landscapes meet ancient and precious buildings. Here you will visit the Cathedral dedicated to Saint Pantaleone and Villa Rufolo which gave the musician Richard Wagner the inspiration to create one of his most famous works, “Parsifal”, and now houses a music concert festival in his honour every year. Return to the Hotel.
Today Pompeii attracts intensively visitors who are looking to find what remains of the ancient splendors of the Roman Empire. Following the eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in the year 79 A.D., Pompei laid buried and forgotten for hundreds of years. The excavations, which started in the 18th Century, brought to light fabulously preserved frescoes which adorned the walls and floors of the Villas, an amphitheatre and many things could prove the prosperity of this town in the past. The archaeological excavations are still being carried out today in order to give modern society the treasure of the past.
Free time for lunch before visiting the volcano Vesuvius which was the origin of this destruction. Mount Vesuvius overlooks the whole Gulf of Naples and it’s reachable by bus which goes up to 1000 meters. The crater will then be reached by foot together with authorized Alpine guides. Back to the Hotel.
Ercolano was destroyed, together with Pompei, by the eruption of the Vesuvius in the year 79 A.D. It was a residential area, not holding Pompei’s business prominence, but full of well-to-do Romans' opulent villas. When the catastrophe of 79 A.D. occurred, the town was submerged under a torrent of mud and lava that hardened into a soft tuff that preserved many of the frescoes and objects that you can admire today. A large portion of treasures lie buried under the rock, so excavations are still being carried out. Return to the Hotel.
